Bednets- Imagine that an international aid organization (Skeeter S.W.A.T. International) and the Cardoon federal government want to work together to try and stop the spread of malaria. They have decided to give the citizens of Cardoon free bednets to keep mosquitoes away from them at night, the time when the bugs are most vicious. Having and using a bednet cuts your chances of getting infected in half; you can still get bitten at other times of the day, and once you get bitten, you can pass on the disease. Skeeter S.W.A.T. and Cardoon have enough money and delivery trucks to get bednets to 4 out of every 10 people. A lottery system determines who in Cardoon will get the nets. Because the nets wear out after one year of use, there is a new lottery held yearly and new nets are distributed.
Whew, what a word problem! Don't worry, the computer model has done the hard part for you. You see 5 years of results.
Here are some questions to consider:
-Is the bednet program working?
-Which settlements in Cardoon get
the best results? Why do you think that is?
-How might the bednet distribution
program be improved?
